Photography Courses for Wellness & Self-Discovery - From Just £5
Did you know that taking a photograph every day improves your well-being through giving the user a sense of purpose, competence, achievement, community interaction as well as providing the opportunity for reminisence as well as more exercise ....
Photography allows us to express feelings we can't put into words, foster positive emotions, develop personal insight and help to overcome stress, anxiety and depression. Looking through a camera distracts us from past or future concerns and makes us focus on what is in front of us in the present moment. It allows us to simply observe, and by slowing down, photography and mindfulness are combined with nature to explore and record the world around you.
Mindfulness helps to experience a different way of creating photographs. I will help you go through essential composition techniques in an easy-to-understand, friendly, calm, supportive way, reducing stress, improving well-being, resulting in beautiful, eye-catching photographs that you will most definitely be proud of.
The class itself is kept simple, low tech and fun with lots of tea, coffee and delicious compassion cake. We will start with a gentle introduction to your camera's different settings before having a supportive, gentle walk (and talk if you feel like it) to practice the essentials to get creative with whatever kind of phone or camera you have. We will look at light, texture, tone, colour, contrast, shadow and perspective bringing the importance of each of these into photography.
Photowalks for Wellness are held either from my studio here in Wareham, or we can meet in Arne or Swanage. The cost is £20 for a one-to-one session which lasts 2 hours (nearer to 3 as I just get so passionate about cameras!) or group walks will be held on request where the cost is just £5 per person, based on a maximum size group of 4. Just drop me a message to firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Full Day Workshops are available at nearby Corfe Castle and cover the same as the above but also a thorough grounding is given to composition, how to spot a great subject and turn a snapshot into a fabulous, eye-catching one. We will practice taking pictures of the famous steam trains, the local church and village as well as a nearby waterfall, perfect for getting creative with shutter speeds. The price for a full day's workshop is £75 and is again run with a maximum of 2 people.
So why me and what experience do I have? And yes, those that know me well know that I'm very shy about my achievements ....
I've been helping guests develop their photography skills since 2004, showing consistently how small compact cameras can achieve BIG eye-catching results. 23 of my guests have won prizes, with the first person who I ever helped having had his footage included in the most recent Blue Planet II. Yes, Erick Higuera started with a simple compact camera, an Olympus 5060 back in 2004.
I'm still so proud that I helped David Smith, Countryfile's Photography Calendar Winner last year with his gorgeous picture of 5 piglets when he was starting out in underwater photography back in 2007 in Oxford.
Workwise, I have been working in the care profession for the past 6 years. I hold a full DBS and have worked helping all different people with different abilities to achieve the same thing - goals and direction to fulfil their lives. I have coached, listened to, supported and offered ideas, guidance, helped to rehabilitate users, offenders, people with addictions into the community in a completely safe, trustworthy, supportive, non-judgemental way. I have worked with St Mungos, BCHA, Dorset Healthcare Trust (St Ann's Hospital), Poole, Bournemouth, Dorchester and Southampton Hospitals, as well as helping to rehabilitate a young girl into her first ever home and community at the young age of 24.
There's nothing I love more than helping to develop guests' confidence, grow their self-esteem and see them gain lots of positive achievements (and cheer them on all the way!)
This is what Shane Mitchell and Sharon Budden have to say:
"I had an amazing day, and I have learnt loads. anyone thinking on going on a beginners course for photography I would highly recommend Maria she was and is a brilliant teacher, thank you very much:)." Shane Mitchell, Full Day Workshop
"So I'm pretty useless with my camera that I've had for about 3 years now. I decided to look into learning more about photography. I spotted Maria's post and arranged to meet and go for a walk and a chat. Well, straight away (due to Maria being so friendly and down-to-earth) within 5 minutes I had learnt about apertures. Maria explains everything in such an understandable and easily achievable way! I love taking photos but understanding how to take even better photos blew me away! I cannot recommend highly enough for anyone to contact Maria with questions. She has so much knowledge and experience that she is willing to share with us, so I would tell anyone to get in touch with her. I know I will certainly be meeting her again very soon. Thank you Maria" xx Sharon Budden, Swanage
"Maria is such a friendly, bubbly, helpful person, she's a joy to be around and her knowledge is amazing" Linda Woodland, Wareham
